Scan Your Body and Energy

On Wednesday, after a high energy trip to see my parents and family, I was resting and napping for a short bit. When I was there, I was paying attention to some of the significant stiffness in my mid-back and felt that it intuitively connected to the anxiety I had about a disjointed schedule while working along my travels and some other sources of stress in my life. It got me thinking a lot about how much our bodies and energy hold onto specific situations, memories, and emotions.

I’m at a point in my life where I’ve covered many surface issues, but I want to journey deeper into what needs to be healed. The constant seeking and soothing is one of the things I believe is the purpose of life itself, so finding ways to propel ourselves along this journey is essential. This body and energy scanning technique is one of the best ways I’ve found to do that. It’s also very simple, since you can take as little or as much time as you want. 

All you need to do is decide how you want to scan yourself. First pick between your physical body or your energetic self. This scanning can go from chakra to chakra, meridian to meridian, or from body part to body part—whatever works best for you in the moment that you decide to check in with your wellbeing. 

From here, pick a place to start. For instance, you might choose to first observe your feet, noting the places where there is pain, tingling, or other sensations in that particular part of your being. Whether it is pleasant or unpleasant is irrelevant, just allow yourself to fully feel all that is there. 

Once you feel relatively acquainted with that particular body part (or energy center), you can ask it some questions. If you feel a strong sensation in one place you can ask the feeling “what are you holding onto?” and wait in stillness and silence for an answer. It may not be a verbal response, but rather an emotion, a sensation shift, an intuition, or some other experience. All of these are perfectly fine, since your only duty during this meditation is to observe and inquire. Like always, answers will naturally arise if and when they are meant to. 

When doing this scan, you may feel a powerful emotion. With my own feet, which I feel symbolically represents stability and grounding, I have felt a strong feeling of fear in the past. Quickly, I was able to interpret this as meaning that I didn’t feel stable in this moment and I was propelled to look deeper into the issue, reflecting on what may be causing the anxiety (in this case, it was a mix of financial stress and PTSD flashbacks from the previous day). Because I had noticed something strong in this area of my body, I decided not to scan any other limbs and instead focus solely on what my feet had shared with me. When you are doing this, you may decide you want to spend weeks focusing on one area or energy center, or you may cover your entire system in one single go. It’s completely up to you!

I use this technique all the time when I don’t know where to start healing, too, since I can then just begin from the ground up and figure out where needs the most attention. It’s also very helpful when a certain part of your body hurts and you can ask it why, waiting quietly for its intuitive answer and just observing the pain. 

Like with any healing, the first step is to know what needs to be healed, which is why this body and energy scanning technique is so vital for our spiritual growth. Once we know what our body or energy is holding onto, we can then use all the other self-care and healing techniques we know to directly address the issue causing the pain, energy imbalance, or emotion.
